Honda has notched up more than 1,000 sales as a direct result of the scrappage scheme in just its first few days.

The company now has a UK market share of more than four per cent, thanks partly to the success of the Jazz, which was launched here in October plus the new Honda Insight, which is out-performing expectations.

A Honda spokesperson said: "Given the whole life costs of both of these cars I suspect they will prove popular with scrappage customers.

The Jazz starts at £9,990, while Insight starts at £15,490, which with the scrappage discounts results in prices of just £7,990 and £13,490.

"The CR-V is also out-performing expectations and is top of its sector. Some of this success may be attributed to the robust finance offers we have available currently."

Free payment protection is available on all promoted Civics and CR-Vs bought on Honda finance and means Honda will cover the monthly car repayments for up to a year, safeguarding buyers should they be made redundant for more than three months.

As well as complimentary payment protection the promotion also offers substantial cost savings and a range of low-rate finance packages, including free hire purchase or low deposit and low monthly payment PCPs at 4.9%.

There are also reduced prices on some models such as the Civic 1.8 SE with leather at £14,495, which is a saving of £1,520, while the 2.2-litre diesel counterpart is offered at £14,995, which is a saving of £2,295.

Rev-hungry customers can pick up a Civic Type R GT for just £199 a month with free finance, while the CR-V range powered by Honda’s i-CTDi diesel engine now starts from £17,995, which is a saving of up to £3,100.

"We know that people still want to buy new cars," says Tom Gardner, head of marketing at Honda UK. "But everyone’s a bit nervous at the moment about making such a significant purchase.

Our package of cost savings, financial offers and the security of payment protection is one of the strongest we have ever offered and should help our customers feel more confident about buying a Honda."

Honda is also offering a range of strong contract hire rentals. The S2000 roadster is available for £299 a month while the Civic Type R can be secured for £199 a month on contract hire too.

A Civic 2.2-iCTDi SE with leather costs £190 a month, the CR-V 2.2 i-CDTi ES is on offer at £229 a month and the Accord 2.2 i-DTEC ES GT with satellite navigation is reduced to £279 a month.
