IT’S a breath of fresh air in more ways than one to visit this attractive four-bedroom detached property in the village of Stainton on the outskirts of Middlesbrough.
Not only are there open views to front and rear, with a field at the back, but the entire home has been refurbished in a striking contemporary style. Jayne Mudd, who lives here with husband Jonathan and teenage daughter, says the couple love interior design and jumped at the chance to give the 40-year-old house a fresh new look throughout. “We’ve tried to use top-class fixtures and fittings, the kind we’d like if we were looking for a house,” says Jayne. As just one example of this attention to detail, it took Jayne six months to track down the distinctive chandelier in the reception hallway, because she insisted on finding one that was exactly right for the room. In the hallway, another notable feature is the stair rail, which was handmade by a craftsman who has a forge in the area. The couple’s favourite room is the spacious, oak-floored conservatory, which leads off the lounge, and has views of a patio. “We use it a dining room and it’s also a lovely place to relax and read.” As well as a range of modern units, the kitchen also has integral appliances, including an integral microwave, and a big American-style fridge freezer. The cooker is a Rangemaster and there is a seating area. “It’s nice to have your breakfast there in the morning, because the kitchen also leads out to the garden.” The lounge has a living flame gas fire with a travertine fire surround, which has a granite inlay. Travertine was also used for the elegant flooring in the reception hall, which continues into the dining room and the downstairs cloakroom. This is a type of limestone which interestingly was once used in the building of the Colosseum in Rome. The actual dining room is currently used as a garden room. Upstairs there are four double bedrooms, two with modern en suite shower rooms, plus a large and updated family bathroom with both a shower cubicle and freestanding bath. “My daughter’s bedroom at the front has a balcony off it, which is lovely to sit out on.” Outside there is an integral garage and well-established gardens to the front, side and rear, with trees, shrubs and plants. There is also an inviting deck, and the family enjoy the great outdoors year-round, since they have a patio heater. “With no houses at the front and the open views to the rear, it’s feels as if you’re in the country. But it’s only a few minutes in the car to my job in Middlesbrough.” Yet, after two-and-a-half years here, the family are looking to move to a property - where Jayne and Jonathan can work their renovation magic once again. “This was the second house that we did up,” she laughs. “We love it, but when we’re finished we want to do another one! “And in our next house we also need an annexe for a relative.” She adds that the house would be suitable for a number of buyers, including a family or a professional couple. “We’ve kept the colour scheme neutral and everyone who visits the house absolutely loves it.” This contemporary home on Greenacres in Stainton is on the market for £430,000.
