Take a tour around some of the most beautiful homes and villages in the North East.

This cottage delivers

THIS historic house in the peaceful hamlet of Yearby definitely has the stamp of distinction.

Post Office Cottage, which is several hundred years old and dispatched its last mail in the 1950s, is a charming and individual property with particularly attractive gardens to both the front and rear.

“I used to deliver papers here in 1958,” reminisces owner David Moore, who lives here with wife Linda.

Up the generous drive, which provides ample room for parking, by the entrance there is a red post box set in the wall as a reminder of the property’s history.

But don’t bring along your Christmas cards to post.

“I bought it and blocked it up,” says David.

A stable style inner wooden door leads to a vestibule and then the handsome oak-beamed lounge/dining room which features a brick inglenook fireplace.

The couple say it’s their favourite room.

“It’s so cosy with the beams and the coal fire on at night at this time of year.”

Also on the ground floor is a useful study which, like the lounge, has Yorkshire sliding windows.

The ground-floor bathroom has terracotta tiled flooring and the galley-style kitchen has ceramic flooring, antique-style pine units, inset double electric oven and separate induction hob, plus space for a small breakfast table.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms, both with Yorkshire sliding windows, and the first one boasts another brick fireplace.

Outside the pretty gardens front and rear are an especially beautiful feature of the house.

“Everyone around here keeps their gardens tidy. It’s such a nice area. But we try to keep it as low maintenance as possible.”

There’s a pretty cherry tree on the front lawn, as well as firs and shrubs.

The private and good-sized rear walled garden, which has a southerly aspect, includes several patios, flower borders and a brick outbuilding which was probably once part of a stable.

A highlight of the tranquil location, surrounded by farmland, is the wildlife.

“There are lots of birds - woodpeckers, blackbirds, bluetits. I put currants down for the blackbirds,” laughs Linda.

Other visitors include rabbits and pheasants.

The hamlet of Yearby is peaceful, “but at the same time it’s handy for Redcar,” David points out.

However, despite being born and bred on Teesside, a change in family circumstances means the couple want to sell their house to move further south - at least as far as Suffolk.

“Our two children live in London,” explains Linda.

“Our first grandchild is due at Christmas and we just want to be near them. It’s seven hours to drive there and another seven hours back, and I don’t want my grandchild to be so far away.

“But we’ll miss it here.”

Post Office Cottage is on the market priced at £249,995. For more information call Michael Poole, Redcar on 01642 285041.
