AFTER 26 joyful years of living at Debena House in Whickham, Brenda and William Lane feel it is time to move on and give another family the chance to enjoy the property. Now their children have all grown up and moved away, Brenda and William now want to downsize to a smaller home, more suited to their relaxed lifestyle.
William said: "The kids have left home now so we are moving into a bungalow 50 yards away in the same estate." Debena House was built in 1976 on land which originally formed part of the Whickham Park House estate. Located in the heart of the village, the large four-bedroom detached house offers much potential for further development. Accommodation includes an entrance hall with imposing wooden staircase which forms the focal point of the room. Brenda said: "The staircase was hand-built from mahogany around 20 years ago. It is beautiful." The ground floor has a large open-plan sitting room and lounge with fireplaces and archway features. There are a dining room, breakfasting kitchen, study and utility room. The study in particular is one of Brenda’s favourite rooms. "I like the study room at the front of the house," she said. "I have always loved to go in there and read because the sun shines through the window." The lounge was a popular room when the children were at home. "When the kids lived here, I used to like spending time in the living room with them," continued Brenda. "The rooms are all very light and spacious and are versatile enough to adapt to suit your individual lifestyle." Upstairs there is a master bedroom with en-suite shower room, allowing extra privacy from the rest of the family or guests. There are three further bedrooms, all with fitted wardrobes, and a separate family bathroom. One of the main attractions to the property is the garden. The border plants hug the lush green lawns that stretch the length of the garden. There is a spacious patio area, perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine or two on a summer evening. At the bottom of the garden, towering over the rest of the surrounding trees, stands a tree that, according to William, is "hundreds of years old". Despite its village location, the property enjoys a wealth of privacy and isn’t overlooked at any point. William said: "The house is 100 yards from the main road and when taxis arrive, we don’t even hear them. The property is perfect for families as it offers a safe and secure haven away from traffic." The fact that the couple are staying in the area shows the appeal of Whickham Park. "We are staying in the area because the village is ideal. There is a doctors’ surgery, health centre, four pubs, two Indian restaurants and two Chinese takeaways," said William. Debena House, Whickham Park, Whickham, is for sale through Your Move at a guide price of £895,000, tel: 0191 488 7968. |
