Rural charms of the former cow sheds

Nov 20 2008

by Karen McLauchlan, Evening Gazette

HOW many of us dream of living in the peace and tranquility of the countryside? Well at this beautiful home near Stokesley it’s a reality.

The Old Byre, Peaton Carr Farm is in an idyllic, rural setting.

But with Stokesley town life just a short car ride away, there’s everything you need close by.

Current owners bought the property five years ago after falling in love with the location.

“The views are fantastic,” they said. “We’re surrounded by countryside but it’s only two minutes by car to Stokesley - so you don’t feel isolated.

“It’s the best of both worlds.”

The Old Byre - as the name suggests - was converted from former cow sheds at the local farm. The conversion had already taken place before the current owners moved in.

The grade II listed property is thought to be more than 260 years old.

And beams galore and original doorways are all reminders of the property’s former life - adding character to this special home.

Current owners particularly love the living room which has no upper level and is open from floor to ceiling.

As well as a vaulted ceiling there is a brick chimney fireplace with stone hearth and fuel burning stove.

“The ceiling is the full height of the property and has huge beams and sky lights.”

Other accommodation includes a farmhouse kitchen/family room with handmade units and granite work surfaces.

There is also a sitting/family room, two bedrooms and a family bathroom on this floor.

Stairs lead to a galleried first floor landing where you’ll find the master suite with dressing area and en suite bathroom.

From the kitchen the first floor landing leads to a bedroom/play room and home office.

There is also an attached storeroom/workshop.

“We fell in love with the property as soon as we saw it,” added the owners.

“We were looking for something in a more rural location and this was perfect.”

They added: “The huge original beams are such a great feature.

“We also love the original doorways which were made wide enough to get the cows through.

“We’ve managed to trace the property back 260 years, but it’s probably older than that.

“Peaton Carr Farm is no longer a working farm, although there’s still some livestock in the fields. It’s great to look out over the open fields and see the sheep grazing.”

Current owners love the country life, but with ambitions to build or convert their own place, The Old Byre is up for sale.

“This has been a really great home,” they added.

“The location is lovely, there’s so much space and we’ve really enjoyed living here.

“It’s very quiet and peaceful.”

The Old Byre, Peaton Carr Farm, Stokesley is inviting offers in the region £425,000. More details from Rentons Countrywide, Stokesley on 01642 711555.
