Take a tour around some of the most beautiful homes and villages in the North East.

Rest and play in style

Jan 22 2009

by Karen McLauchlan, Evening Gazette

IF you’re in search of the country life, this could be the perfect property.

The property at Bewley Hill Farm, Norton Back Road, Sadberge was once working farm buildings.

But in 2000 owners converted it into the beautiful home you see today.

Dating back more than 150 years the property is packed with character - with an original wheel house and beautiful beamed ceilings just some of its special features.

“We know parts of the property date back to 1853,” said the owner, whose father bought Bewley Hill Farm in 1968.

“It was added to in around 1920, but other parts are probably older than the 1850s.”

The historic wheelhouse - which would once have been home to ox-driven machinery - is now the property’s drawing room, giving panoramic views across the countryside.

“The room is about 24ft long and 24ft wide,” said the owner, “and has windows floor to ceiling and a under floor heating. It’s a great room.”

The owner spent around two years converting the barn, having first improved and sold the nearby farmhouse.

“It’s a fantastic family home,” he added. “It has seven bedrooms - of which all but one are double bedrooms - and two large lounges meaning there’s plenty of space.”

Other accommodation includes a dining room, kitchen/breakfast room with a range of handmade floor and wall cupboard units with granite worksurfaces, utility room and shower room.

The family room has exposed roof beams and trusses in the vaulted ceiling and a period carved fireplace surround with cast iron fireplace, marble hearth and open grate. The chimney breast alcoves include book shelving with storage cupboards, designed and constructed in period style. The first floor also includes a study - which can be used as a seventh bedroom - three bedrooms, including one en suite, and a family bathroom.

On the first floor there are three further bedrooms and a shower room.

The owner said his father bought Bewley Hill as a mixed arable and beef farm.

“When things became tough for farming, we decided to convert the properties at the site,” he said.

The house is set in around an acre of land. There is a stone paved courtyard surrounded on three sides by the property and to the side an all weather full sized tennis and basketball court.

To the rear there is a formal garden with extensive lawns, mature trees and beyond a substantial paddock.

There is also a triple garage. And further land of around 13 acres is available by separate negotiation.

“It’s a great location,” said the owner. “It’s quiet and peaceful, but you’re 10 minutes from Middlesbrough or Darlington.”

But with plans to move on to another project the property is now for sale.

“This project has worked really well. Some barn conversions can be quite dark, but this property is so light and spacious,” he added.

“It’s a great house.”

The property at Bewley Hill Farm, Norton Back Road, Sadberge is up for sale at £629,000. More details from Browns estate agency, Stockton on 01642 677411.
