DO you love contemporary design but also yearn for the grandeur of bygone days?
You might think the two styles are poles apart, but Fellows Hall, an individually-designed luxury house on Brantingham Drive in Ingleby Barwick, combines both to create a distinctive and original property. The owner, who lives there with his wife and child, designed the six-bedroom property himself. “Everything that was being built looked the same,” he says. “Many houses have lots of small rooms and that isolates the family. “I wanted it to be as nice and light and airy as possible.” The name “Fellows Hall” refers to the superb vaulted entrance hallway, pictured below. “It’s got high ceilings and a grand staircase, like an old Victorian hall,” the owner explains. The spacious rooms on the ground floor follow an open plan, with each flowing into the next. The living room has an inset log burning stove, floor to ceiling windows and French doors to the garden. It opens on to the dining area, which has a soaring 18ft ceiling. From there to the kitchen, which he says is his wife’s favourite room. The kitchen features a central island unit with ceramic hob and stainless steel canopy over, walnut units with granite worktops, and an integrated wine cooler and wine rack. It opens on to a garden room, which has both floor to ceiling and Velux windows. On the ground floor there is also a utility room with a range of units and a Belfast sink, as well as a cloakroom/wc. To the first floor there is a split landing, again with floor to ceiling windows, and a cinema/videogames room on a mezzanine area overlooking the dining area. It has French doors to a Juliet balcony, and is one of the owner’s favourite rooms. “It has views because it overlooks open fields and the Cleveland Hills,” he says. Also to the first floor there are two bedrooms, both with doors to a connecting Jack and Jill shower room/wc, plus a guest bedroom with en suite shower room and also a house bathroom. To the second floor is the master suite, which is the owner’s other favourite space, because of its luxury. It has long rear windows, Velux windows and a Juliet balcony overlooking the garden. Extra features include a dressing room, and a magnificent en suite bathroom, with a twin Jacuzzi bath, twin wash basins and an inset LCD television. On this level there are two further bedrooms and an open play area, plus a cloakroom/wc. Outside, to the front of the house, there is a walled border with flowers and shrubs. To the back there is a decked terrace with water feature and mood lighting in the south-facing rear garden. There is also a double driveway and detached double garage. The property benefits from recess down lighters throughout and is wired for surround sound, even in the garden. The family moved into the property late last year, but have now decided to sell it. “We built it and love it, and we’d design a home again,” says the owner. “However, right now we want to do certain things with our life, but our money is tied up in the property. “The house would be perfect for a family with children or teenagers, and it takes only 10 minutes to commute to Middlesbrough.” Fellows Hall, on Brantingham Drive, Ingleby Barwick, is on the market with a guide price of £650,000.
