STEP into a world of luxury and style at this seven-bedroom home on Swainston Close in Wynyard.
From the moment you enter the beautiful reception hallway, with its solid oak staircase and galleried landing, it’s clear that this indivi- dually designed property has much to offer. “The house has a lovely warm feeling,” says owner Margaret Errington, who lives here with husband Gerard. With so many elegant rooms, she says it’s hard to decide on her favourite. However, because the couple are fond of entertaining, they love having a spacious lounge and dining room. The lounge has French doors to the rear patio, a pebble-effect living flame gas fire and is open plan to the dining room, which Margaret says will easily take her dining table, which seats 14. “We have musical soirees in the lounge. My husband and I both play the piano, and all his family play instruments - guitars, flutes, even Northumbrian pipes. “It’s a relaxing room and because we have a cinema room upstairs no TV is allowed in there,” she laughs. A keen cook, she is enthusiastic about the huge kitchen, which includes a range of farmhouse oak units, Belfast sink and ceramic tiled flooring with underfloor heating. The kitchen is open to the delightfully-named orangerie, which is an upscale version of a conservatory. This light and airy room overlooks the rear garden. Yet more rooms on the ground floor include a family room with French doors to the rear garden, utility with ceramic tiled floor, and cloaks/wc. There is also a large games room, a favourite of husband Gerard, which can house a full size snooker table. “He used to play cricket and rugby, and he now plays golf. He has boxes of trophies.” And Gerard isn’t the only link with sport, as three years ago the couple bought the house from Nicky Butt, the Newcastle footballer. Most of the ground floor rooms and the master bedroom upstairs have inset ceiling speakers, as part of a surround-sound media system. There are five bedrooms to the first floor and an attractive balcony off the main landing. The master bedroom suite offers pure luxury, it includes a dressing room with fitted ward- robes and a bathroom with a large sunken whirlpool bath and two wash hand basins. Leading off this room, there is a shower cubicle and a built-in sauna. The other four bedrooms on the first floor all have en suite shower rooms, plus there is an additional family bathroom. One en suite has bathroom fittings in Disney character designs, which Margaret says is especially popular with her two young grandchildren. She also points out that one of these first-floor bedrooms, also with en suite, is in an annex above the garage, and access is by stairs leading from the inner hallway off the ground-floor utility room. Because of its private location, it could be used by a nanny if a family who bought the property had children. To the second floor there are a further two bedrooms, both with Velux windows. One has an en suite shower room, while the other is used as a cinema/TV room, where Gerard enjoys his sport. Outside the property has a driveway to the front and side, along with a double integral garage. There are electric access gates, in addition to a camera surveillance system. To the rear there is a pleasant garden, with raised patio, which has a good view of the nearby country park. “The garden and patio are nice and there are lights in the trees so you can have a barbecue at night.” There are also external speakers and wiring for a hot tub. “I’ve loved the experience of living here,” says Margaret. However, she’s planning to leave the pampered life behind and go back to her rural roots. “We want to run an equestrian centre and live on the land with horses, sheep, goats and hens.” This large home on Swainston Close, Wynyard is on the market with a guide price of £1.1m.
