THIS country cottage is picture perfect. And the good looks continue on the inside at The Haven in Newby.
The former gamekeeper’s cottage dates back to the 18th century and is situated overlooking the green in this village which can be found north of Stokesley. Jan Wrigley bought the property 34 years ago and over the years has transformed it into the dream home it is today. “It had an outside toilet, no central heating and no real garden to speak of when I first bought it,” she said. “It was a real restoration project. Beams and doors had been boarded up - but they’re fully on show now.” The property is packed with period charm, combined with all the requirements of modern living. And its light, bright interior and fantastic original features mean this is a cottage that certainly lives us to its name. On the ground floor Jan has created a fantastic farmhouse kitchen. But there’s no cold feet in the winter months in this room as there is under floor heating below the quarry tiles. “I love the kitchen,” said Jan. “It’s great for having friends over - they all sit around the table chatting while I prepare the food. And it’s also ideal when you’re having all the family round.” The kitchen has a range of cream fronted units with oak worktops, exposed beams, original pine cupboards and a fireplace with gas stove. On the ground floor there’s also a living room with exposed beams and an inglenook fireplace, and bathroom with free standing bath and shower cubicle. Up to the first floor and you’ll find three bedrooms and a shower room. But there’s also great outdoor space at this house. Jan knocked down an old garage to create a lovely side terrace. To the rear is a cottage garden, Indian stone terrace, garden shed, small natural pond and summer house. “It’s a south-facing garden so we get the sun all day,” she added. Jan also loves this property’s location. “Newby is a lovely, friendly village and this house is in a great spot - right on the village green. “But it’s only seven or eight minutes to Stokesley and Coulby Newham and it’s 15 minutes into central Middlesbrough so it’s really handy with good access to the A19.” But with plans to downsize, the cottage is now up for sale. “I’ve absolutely loved living here,” she said. “It’s a great property.” The Haven at Newby is up for sale with a guide price of £375,000. An open viewing day is being held at the property on Saturday, from 11am-3pm. To attend, or to find out more about the property, contact Roseberry Newhouse in Stokesley on 01642 711111. |
