Gorgeous Grange for sale in Ulgham, near Morpeth

May 1 2010

by Francesca Craggs, The Journal

MORE than 250 years of history greet visitors to Ulgham Grange, an impressive manor house set in rolling Northumberland countryside.

Pat and John Burns have spent 15 blissful years living there, seven miles from Morpeth.

They have loved the tranquillity and atmosphere of the property, but the time now feels right to move on to another house, despite their sadness at leaving.

Pat said: “It’s going to be a big wrench to move because I love it, but we are moving to Wales to be nearer our daughter and son-in-law.”

The Grade II-listed house was built around 1750 and stands, majestic, upon the banks of the River Lyne.

It is set in two acres of land, including garden and paddock, and includes a detached coach house with potential for further development.

The view of the garden can be enjoyed from the farmhouse-style kitchen, with its oil-fired Aga.

Pat said this is one of her favourite rooms: “It is such a warm space. The kitchen faces south so I can look out into the garden and enjoy the view.”

The ground floor also has an entrance hall leading to the reception hall with doors to the back garden and a large arched window on the staircase. A further hallway leads to a spacious drawing room with window seat, a sitting room with south-facing views and a library with a corner fireplace plus French doors to a quiet courtyard. There is also a cloakroom and utility.

Pat said: “I love being in the library with the fire lit. It’s just fabulous.”

Upstairs, there are four bedrooms, three of which are south-facing, and two are complete with en-suite bathrooms. There is also a main bathroom and a study area.

The property is approached along a private, gravelled driveway, past the single-storey coach house.

When Pat and her family moved into the house, it was in need of a good deal of work, but now, with a new roof, new windows and an attractively decorated interior, the house has been restored to its original grandeur.

Pat said the family were attracted by the sunny, warm feel and they will miss its charm and character.

“I will mostly miss the peace and quiet of the area,” says Pat. “The nearest road is 100 metres away and there is very little traffic. We have super neighbours and there is a lovely feel.”

Ulgham Grange, Ulgham, Morpeth, is for sale through Foster Maddison at a guide price of £795,000, tel: 0191 222 1066.
