LIVING on Norton Green means you’ve got one of the best gardens in the Tees Valley - right on your doorstep.
Within seconds the owner of this character cottage can be taking a stroll across the village’s beautiful Green and taking in views of the pretty duck pond. Purchasing the property more than three years ago, a huge amount of hard work and effort has gone into restoring this house to its former glory. “When we bought it it was an absolute mess,” he said. “It had been rented out for a lot of years and had a real 1970s look inside. “We’ve worked really hard to bring back the property’s character.” From new floors to rebuilding fireplaces, the renovation of this property has been a top to bottom job. Dating back to about 1815, it’s thought the property was once a double fronted house but was split in two many years ago. The open plan ground floor has a real period feel and includes a lounge, dining room and fitted kitchen. Owners have laid a beautiful slate floor through the ground level. And the traditional fireplace has been rebuilt with a huge wood mantle. “The wood came from a joiner in Staithes,” explained the owner. “But apparently the timber originally came from a ship that was wrecked off the coast at Staithes.” The owners have remodelled the ground floor to create a feeling of space - creating one large living space out of two smaller sized rooms and adding a new staircase. “We’ve put in a solid oak kitchen which is quite modern, but we’ve included traditional features such as a Belfast sink,” said the owner. “It’s a combination of traditional and modern, but I think it works really well.” On the first floor there are two bedrooms and a bathroom with original flooring salvaged from elsewhere in the property and now re-laid in the master bedroom. “We’ve had some good advice from the locals on getting the place looking like it would have been years ago.” French doors lead out to an inner courtyard - a peaceful place to soak up the sun and enjoy the fresh air. But owners say overlooking the Green means they’ve always got access to a great garden whenever they need it. “It’s a great location,” he said. “We love to sit out on the Green. You can easily spend a couple of hours out there on a nice day.” A year’s hard work and more than £35,000 has gone into transforming the property. “The house has now got such a nice feel to it,” added the owner. “Norton is also a great location, it has a real community feel to it.” But needing to be based closer to work means the property is up for sale. “We’re also looking for something bigger,” he added. “But this is a great property. It’s got a lovely feel inside and we’ve loved living here in Norton.” 19 The Green, Norton is up for sale at £179,950. More details from Halifax, Stockton on 01642 607191. |
