Fenrother home is a family favourite

Dec 5 2009

by Mieka Smiles, The Journal

FENROTHER Grange sits in splendid isolation, commanding impressive views over the surrounding countryside. It’s this stunning setting that first attracted Jeremy and Andrea Light.

“The main thing is the location,” explains Jeremy, 34. “We’re surrounded by acres of open green land, a mix of gardens, paddocks and fields.” He lives there with 34-year-old Andrea, a welfare advisor, son Jacob, 19 months and five-week-old Francesca.

Jeremy, an events heath and safety manager, says Jacob loves the property’s spaciousness: “The downstairs is huge. He can entertain himself for hours playing hide and seek. But for my wife and me having the two living rooms and all the other downstairs accommodation means we can live lives separately but come together when we want to.”

With occasional visits from Andrea’s parents, who have owned the house since 1995, they need the space.

Jeremy explains how they first started living there: “My in-laws travel a bit. For the past three years we’ve been house sitting when they’ve gone away, and that’s just developed into living here for the past six months.”

Some people might dislike living with in-laws, but for Jeremy it’s a bonus: “One advantage of living together is that we have built-in babysitters. We get on surprisingly well together.”

The house, just north of Morpeth, lies between the A1 and A697, making it ideal for commuters to Newcastle and elsewhere. “If you travel north you’re soon into the beautiful beaches and wonderful towns. Some of the scenery is spectacular. But you’re not dislocated from Newcastle,” says Jeremy.

Downstairs the house has a family room, drawing room, kitchen, dining room, music room and utility room. Upstairs there are four bedrooms, one with en suite, and a family bathroom. Outline planning permission has been granted for an extension.

Jeremy’s favourite room is the large, L-shaped conservatory that overlooks the garden in three directions.

A private drive leads to the back of the property where a detached garage has space for four cars. The patio and terrace are ideal for barbecues and entertaining.

The property includes 12 acres of grounds with four grazing paddocks, a barn, livestock shed, chicken coops and an open pond. The family used to keep more animals, but still have a goat, horses, chickens, ducks, geese and two dogs, Holly and Jack.

“Jacob loves nothing better than walking dowmn the field feeding carrots to the goat and horses,” said Jeremy.

Now the family are moving to Gloucestershire so Jeremy can progress with his career. “It’ll be a new start for all of us,” says Jeremy. “I think it’s going to be an opportunity to explore a different part of the country and a nice place for our kids to grow up in.”

But he says the North East will always be important to him: “This will always be home, spiritually I suppose, but at the same time one of the great things about going away is coming back and visiting family and friends.”

Fenrother Grange, Morpeth, is for sale through Sanderson Young for offers around £950,000, tel: (01665) 600170.
