Take a tour around some of the most beautiful homes and villages in the North East.

Family home's cottage feel

Jul 10 2008

by Karen McLauchlan, Evening Gazette

THIS fabulous family home really does offer the best of both worlds.

It has the peace and tranquility of a quiet, countryside village.

But easy access to the A19 means you can easily be enjoying town life whenever you need to.

Willowbank is a detached period property on Forest Lane in Kirklevington, near Yarm.

Part of the property dates back to the 19th century, but the house has been extended at either end over the years to provide a place with plenty of space.

The current owner bought the house four years ago.

“We’d been living in a character property in Yarm,” she said, “so we were looking for something with character - and more space. As soon as we saw this house we really liked it.”

She added: “The centre of the house is very old - dating back to the 19th century. But it’s been extended at one end with a garage and at the other with a kitchen and a bedroom above.”

Since moving in, the five-bedroom house has been given the makeover treatment from top to bottom.

“The house had real 70s and 80s decor when we moved in,” she said. “So we’ve worked on every room in the house.”

And the hard work has paid off, creating a house with countryside charm.

The ground floor has a beautiful re-fitted kitchen/diner with French doors leading out to the garden.

The cottage feel continues in the living room, which has a period-style fire place and beamed ceiling.

“We love the kitchen and the living room,” she added. “They are great rooms and we spend a lot of time in them.”

Up on the first floor there are five bedrooms - the master having an en suite - and a family bathroom. Outside there are large gardens to both front and rear and a garage.

The owner, who has two children, added: “Both gardens are big and the children spent a lot of time out there.”

But location is also key to this house.

“In Kirklevington you feel away from the hustle and bustle of town life,” she said, “and it’s a nice quiet village. It’s a great place for a family and we’re only yards away from the local primary school.”

But with plans to move on to something new on the home front, Willowbank is now up for sale.

“It’s a great house,” she said. “Originally we saw it on a Saturday morning and by the afternoon had put in an offer.

“It’s got a lovely cottage feel and it’s a great family home.”

Willowbank, Forest Lane, Kirklevington is up for sale with an asking price of £549,950.
