ACCORDING to the definition of the word, a ghyl is a mountain stream or rivulet.
But you won’t find any peaks or flowing water in this week’s Dream Home - save for inside one of the three luxury bathrooms, that is. For Green Ghyl is the name of the stone built property in the East Cleveland village of Moorsholm, on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and just a 15 minute drive from Guisborough. The house stands on a commanding corner plot with panoramic views all around over open countryside, across the village and to the recreation ground close by. Owners Trevor and Sheila Hawkins were sold on the home from the moment they saw it and have been there around eight years. “The house itself stands at the end of a terrace - the rest of the properties are about 200 years old and were mining cottages or cottages for farm workers,” says Trevor, who is retired. “Our house is about 20 years old and was built by a plumber who bought the land and built the house. “We’ve done things like put in a new bathroom, we’ve also built a utility room and put in a new kitchen,” he says. The house has a lovely country cottage type feel to it, even though its modern fixtures and fittings ensure it is right up to date. Set over three floors it has four bedrooms and two sitting rooms providing lots of versatile space for any self respecting family. On the ground floor there’s a spacious 20ft by 15ft lounge with a stone fireplace housing a multi-fuel stove-style fire. Two windows make the most of the views and the room leads through to the kitchen where you’ll find another 20ft of space just right for families. Shaker-style wall units and granite effect worktops fit in nicely to show the room off and two windows make it light and airy. A lower ground floor hall with a natural stone floor leads on to a 16ft by 12ft sitting room, a ground floor bedroom and a bathroom. There’s also a laundry room housing all the home’s utilities. Upstairs, the spindled staircase leads to a landing and three more bedrooms. The master bedroom, stretching 16ft by 14ft, has fitted wardrobes and two windows look out onto open views - and its own en suite dressing room and shower room. Bedroom two is 15ft by 9ft, bedroom three is 10ft by 9ft and there’s a luxury bathroom on this floor too, fitted with a free-standing roll top-style bath, heated towel rail, recessed spotlights and underfloor heating. Trevor added: “I’d say the lounge was our favourite room, we’ve got a multi-fuel stove in there and it is a really bright and airy room - because the house was built by a plumber for his own use, it is also very warm,” he says. “The lounge is large with good views. We are fairly high up in the village, the house is on a bit of a slope and is built on three levels. “The aspects are so open - we look out to the Recreation Ground and also down to the chapel, we’re not hemmed in at all.” Outside, Green Ghyl has a gravelled driveway providing off-street parking, a dry stone wall marks the edge of the garden. A second gravelled drive leads to the garage and at the back of the house there’s a stone patio area enclosed by trellis and fencing which proves to be a real sun trap in the summer. The village of Moorsholm has a strong community feel, says Trevor, with lots of activities going on if you want to get involved from entertainment nights and an active WI to a cricket club. The house is on the market because the couple have wanderlust again, he smiles. “We’ve tended to live in each house we’ve been in for about seven years on average,” laughs Trevor. “This is our eighth year here.” Green Ghyl, Recreation View, Moorsholm is on the market with a £385,000 price tag.
