THE tranquil surroundings were the main factor when David and Patricia Moore decided to invest in land for their dream home. The couple began their mammoth project in 2000, and after two years of hard work, their labour of love was complete.
Today, the site is home to Hemingford Lodge, a luxurious and spacious five-bedroom property in County Durham. David, 54, said: “I was walking past this huge garden, it was such a beautiful spot that I was really interested in building a home there. I asked the landowner if he would sell me an acre, and as luck would have it, he did.” David and Patricia say the location of the property is what makes the house so special to them. “The surrounding areas of the house are very private, and it is like we are cocooned in our own little world,” says David. The traditional timber-framed house is brick-built and the roof has clay tiles. Internally, exposed Douglas fir beams and posts feature throughout the family home which has a galleried entrance hall, sitting room, dining room, utility, drawing room and garden room. A particular highlight is the traditional farmhouse- style kitchen fitted with floor and wall-mounted oak kitchen cabinets. Outside, a wide drive sweeps via the imposing entrance gates, up to a generous parking area and decorative paved mosaic feature. The couple have decided to sell their unique home after eight years because their three children have flown the nest. They are also planning to do a spot of travelling. “When there were five of us, it was ideal, but now the children are not here any more we don’t really need the space, but I doubt we will find another house quite like it though.” The property is a 20-minute drive from the Metrocentre, and just 30 minutes by car to Newcastle city centre. The property would be perfect for a family with children as there are two good schools nearby.
