Bygone era of grandeur at Lartington Hall, Barnard Castle

Apr 17 2010

By Naomi Teroni, The Journal

LARTINGTON Hall is a magnificent property recalling bygone days of glamour and elegance.

But above all the imposing Grade II-listed property, set in stunning countryside, is a home, say the owners.

Claire Rackham and her late husband Robin bought the magnificent property in 1979 in a bid to restore it. Claire now lives in the main hall with her son John, his wife Kirsty and their son Robin Jnr.

Lartington Hall, built in 1635, has 45 rooms,  divided between the main hall, six apartments and ancillary rooms. The property, in Barnard Castle, County Durham,  is approached via a sweeping driveway.

There is a grand entrance hall with magnificent ceiling dome. The ground floor has a large dining room, drawing room and impressive ballroom. Ideal for those wanting to keep fit, the historic chapel has been converted into a squash court. The principal reception room is John’s favourite part of the house and benefits from floor-to-ceiling windows, giving a real feeling of space.

He said: “The main reception room has very large windows. It is beautiful during the summer.

“I have many fond memories of being a child playing in the cellar and gathering in the drawing room with family at Christmas and during other holidays.  Homes like this are few and far between.

“Combined with the beautiful gardens, it’s an outstanding property to own. The scenery is gorgeous. You can see for miles all the way to Bowes Museum.”

The grounds and gardens extend to around 6.3 acres. As well as uninterrupted views over surrounding parkland, they also include a woodland known as Crows Wood.

John explains: “The gardens are breathtaking. They were designed by landscaper Joseph Hansom, and filled with statues all around the paths.”

Robin died in 2006 and the family now feel it’s time to move on.

“Lartington Hall was my father’s obsession,” said John. “He even wrote a book detailing its history. It’s no fun living here without him. He often said you never own a house, just live in it until it gets passed on to another family.”

John speaks passionately about his love for his family home. “Lartington Hall is suitable for someone who appreciates architecture and has good taste,” he said. “It needs a family here. I will miss walking through the fields, the space, and all the great parties we’ve had here over the years. The house has really positive vibes.  Lartington Hall is most definitely at peace with itself and I’ll miss it dearly.”

Lartington Hall is for sale through joint agents George F White, tel: 01833 609390, and Strutt and  Parker, tel: 01670 516123,  at £1.1m.
