A pool with a view

Apr 10 2008

by Evening Gazette

IF you’re looking to splash out on a luxury home, consider this four-bedroom detached property on an acre of land in Great Broughton, near Stokesley.

Parkholme, on the High Street, is a spacious and sympathetically restored house, which has panoramic views of the Cleveland Hills and the unusual advantage of a heated indoor pool.

"We use it every morning," says owner Paul Nelson, who lives there with his girlfriend and two teenage children.

"At 7am we’re in there to do 25 lengths. It gets your day off to a good start."

He adds: "It’s more useful to have an indoor pool than an outdoor one, considering the weather in this part of the country."

Paul has lived in the house, which dates from 1752, for 14 years and during that time has had a substantial amount of work done.

His favourite spot is the garden room, which is off the lounge and has French doors leading onto an enclosed and private decked sun terrace.

"That’s because it catches the sun on a morning and on an evening."

Also on the ground floor are the lounge and the dining room, both with cast iron fireplaces in traditional surrounds. In addition, there is a sitting room with oak flooring. There are two kitchens, one leading off the other, both with slate tiled floors, pine units with granite worktops and Belfast sinks.

Mr Nelson explains that, since one kitchen has an Aga, he thought it a good idea to have a second kitchen.

"Not everyone wants to leave the Aga on all summer."

In addition, there is a cloakroom/wc with a terracotta tiled floor, and a utility room.

Interesting period features in many of the rooms are the cast iron radiators, which he had installed in the house.

An inner hall provides access into the triple garage, pool house, changing and pool service rooms and a conservatory. The 40ft x 12ft pool is heated and fully tiled, and the pool house has a vaulted ceiling. The service room houses the mechanical filtration system and the oil tank and heating units for the pool.

There is a shower room/wc, as well as a changing cubicle, and off the pool house is a conservatory, with French doors to the rear garden.

To the first floor there are three bedrooms, two with double door wardrobes, and a bathroom with a double Jacuzzi bath.

There is a fourth bedroom, plus a second bathroom with roll top cast iron bath, on the second floor.

Outside there is a large private enclosed front garden, and to the rear a very private landscaped rear garden with lawns, decking, mature trees and shrubs, and a large fish pond with carp and goldfish.

The property has both an attached triple garage and a rear single garage.

Paul says the family uses the single garage as a bike store, since they are fans of mountain biking. Also at the rear there is a useful tandem garage/workshop.

"Great Broughton is a lovely little village," adds Paul. "Everybody is really friendly, and there are several pubs, a post office, village shop and a primary school."

While he has greatly enjoyed living at Parkholme, he says he now wants to build a house to his own design.

"I want to do more of a futuristic property rather than a traditional one," he explains. "But I’ll definitely have a pool in our next house!"

Meanwhile, for those looking for a prestigious historic residence with plenty of outdoor space, this would be a wonderful home.

Parkholme, on High Street, Great Broughton, is on the market with a guide price of £850,000. A part exchange would be considered. For more details call Sandersons, Stokesley on 01642 711355.
