MOUNT Pleasant is an impressive Victorian home set in attractive grounds and has an away-from-it all feel, but is close to the popular Northumberland village of Corbridge.
The five-bedroom house, with a two-bedroom annexe cottage, sits in more than seven acres of land near Dilston. Ron and Barbara Hunt have lived there with their family for 10 years, but now the children – Rebecca,21, and Graham, 18 – have grown up the couple feel it is time to downsize. “There’s too much room!” explained Barbara. “My husband now works abroad and all the children have gone. The house needs a family.” All the rooms provide generous living spaces, and often include unusual period features. There is a vestibule, a hallway, dual-aspect drawing room plus dual-aspect sitting room, dining room, breakfasting kitchen and cloakroom. The first floor has five large bedrooms , two with en suites, and a family bathroom. The lower ground floor has a games room, utility, garden room and cellar stores. This floor provides the opportunity for a letting unit, subject to planning permission. The adjoining annexe was built in the 1920s for the resident housekeeper. Despite connecting to the main house, the two-storey annexe has its own outside entrance, making it ideal for a teenager or an elderly relative. It has a sitting room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms. More than a century old, Mount Pleasant and its surroundings have a long history. Throughout the 1920s, the gardens were a popular attraction, and Barbara believes a painting of the grounds was commissioned. The house is old but very sturdy, said Barbara. She explained: “When we moved in it only needed a basic makeover. A little damp-proofing and decorating here and there. “We installed a new kitchen and some wood-burning fires too, but the house didn’t need any structural changes.” The kitchen has always been this family’s favourite. It includes an Aga cooker and has incredible views of the grounds and the Tyne Valley. With all this room, the Hunts have learned to utilise it well over the years, including keeping animals such as chickens and ducks. “A local farmer uses some of our fields to graze his cattle,” Barbara explained. “It means we don’t have to cut the grass.” The surroundings provide a tranquil place to live, and the house is less than a mile from Corbridge railway station. The Hunt family will be sad to leave their home behind, but they won’t be moving so far away as Barbara explains, “I want to stay around Corbridge, but obviously move to something smaller. “We’ve never lived in a house longer than this, and I know everyone will be sad not to come back to it, when they come and visit me. After all it’s where they grew up.” Mount Pleasant, Prospect Hill, Corbridge, is for sale through Smiths Gore at offers in excess of £975,000, tel: (01434) 632404. |
