CREATING a home with the ideal mix of modern amenities and traditional elegance can be hard to achieve.
However, this imposing stone-built house in County Durham has achieved just that. Built in 1954, the house is on the former estate of Lord Gort, who once owned most of the land in the surrounding area. Owner Lynne Coulson, 50, wants to sell her home of five-and-a-half years because her teenage daughter will be leaving the nest soon. She said: “I am sad to be moving but my daughter is going away to university so it’s just going to be me here. I plan to stay in the area because it’s so quiet and peaceful, but I want to move to a smaller cottage-style home. “The size is good for families, there’s plenty of open space. It’s also very light and airy. There are a lot of windows front and back, so it catches the sun all day.” The detached property is on Tollgate Road, in the prestigious location of Hamsterley Mill. Lynne, an accountant, said it was the scenic area that originally attracted her to the home. The house sits on three-quarters of an acre that includes a large garden and open green space. She said: “The area is very safe and quiet and the garden is very secure. There are lots of lovely walks through the area as well.” The house has five large bedrooms on the first floor, double glazed windows, an en suite and family bathroom. Lynne said: “The living room is probably my favourite room and I love my bedroom, which is very spacious.” The living room is wired for surround sound and has a sandstone fireplace and coving. The impressive kitchen has granite work surfaces, ceiling spotlights and quarry-effect floor tiling. Lynne said: “The kitchen and dining room are attached so you can walk between the two and the patio doors lead from the dining room into the garden.” There is an attached garage and a gravel driveway, which provides parking for up to five cars. During the time Lynne has lived in the house, she has only had to make minor alterations to the kitchen and a few cosmetic additions to the interior. The property is adjacent to bus links and a range of shopping facilities in Rowlands Gill and the surrounding areas of Consett and Whickham. The MetroCentre is also close by. Commuting to Newcastle city centre takes approximately 25 minutes driving time. The house, on Tollgate Road, Hamsterley Mill, is for sale through Sarah Mains at a guide price of £500,000, tel: (0191) 488-9999. |
