Take a tour around some of the most beautiful homes and villages in the North East.

Perfect retreat in Medburn near Ponteland

Apr 11 2009

by Francesca Craggs, The Journal

LOCATION, location, location, is generally an overused phrase. But it is definitely appropriate when describing the merits of The Orchard.

This executive home is in the sought-after village of Medburn, in Northumberland, close to popular Ponteland. And the property has a wealth of impressive features.

The Orchard is home to sales manager Les Elliot, wife Julia and their children James, 19, and Emma, 15.

Julia, a housewife, said: “Medburn is a beautiful, peaceful village. It’s quiet but is within a short commute of the many amenities of Ponteland.”

The family bought the land and built two properties on the site, moving into the second home in February, last year. Set in almost half an acre, the property has views over the countryside. There is a generous hall, which leads on to a spacious dining hall, drawing room and breakfasting kitchen with utility area. There is also a large, square drawing room, study area and family room in the style of a gin gan.

“I will miss the kitchen, it’s beautiful,” says Julia. “The room opens out to reveal a large family room at the rear.”

Upstairs, there are five large bedrooms, the master having an en suite with bath and double shower cubicle, and two bedrooms sharing a Jack and Jill en suite. There is also a large family bathroom with whirlpool bath and a shower cubicle.

At the back of the detached house is a double garage with long drive framed by gravel patios and large lawns. Features of the house include an inglenook fireplace in the drawing room and a rustic wood burning stove in the dining hall. The home also has underfloor heating on the ground floor and in the bathrooms. It has the feel of a much older home, with its exposed beams and mock period features.

The family are searching for properties near Hexham and Corbridge.

Julia said: “With the children getting older, we have the licence to move a bit further. We aren’t tied down to schools any more with my son at university and daughter finishing her GCSEs. I would also like to have more land. We have a horse and the plan eventually is to be able to keep him on our own property.

“In all honesty, if we had the opportunity, I would love to be able to move the house and put it on a plot with more land. It’s a lovely home.”

The Orchard, Medburn, is for sale through Rook Matthews Sayer at offers over £795,000. Tel: (01661) 860228.
