ESTEEMED architect John Dobson had a hand in the redesign of this characterful Northumberland home. And it certainly shows in the elegant, well proportioned rooms.
After living there for six years, Michael and Alison McManus are selling West Longstone House, their family home in Chatton, Northumberland. The stone-built property was part of a vicarage before its 19th Century redesign. It is now a spacious country residence, including five double bedrooms, as well as a smaller sixth now used as a study. Alison says it has been the perfect place to bring up their twin sons Alex and Ryan, 15. “We’ve made changes to the décor, but the house has a lot of history which we’ve been keen to preserve,” said Alison, naming the Victorian roll-top bath among her favourite features. However, while respecting West Longstone’s heritage, the family have made some modernisations such as a new heating system. West Longstone is approached via a stone pillared driveway, with a high stone wall providing security and privacy, and ample parking. The ground floor has a number of comfortable family rooms, with a large kitchen, living room, dining room and games room framing the impressive reception hall, as well as a cloakroom and laundry space. The couple, who run an accountancy practice, have been able to enjoy the benefits of a country home within easy reach of their offices in Alnwick and Berwick. |
